Valkey keeps the shared state.

What is Tollgate?
Tollgate is a plugin for KrakenD Community Edition that adds API keys, plans and quotas, distributed rate and concurrency limits, IP and geo-IP filtering, a maintenance switch, an audit log and metrics. Every gateway node shares state through Valkey.
How much latency does Tollgate add?
In our October 2026 benchmarks, with Valkey on the same network as the gateway, rate limiting added about 19 µs per request and every feature together about 75 µs. Each synchronous Valkey round trip adds your network's round-trip time on top.
Do I need KrakenD Enterprise?
No. Tollgate runs as a plugin in KrakenD CE 2.13. You build it with KrakenD's builder image so it matches your gateway version.
